New “cut scores” could mean lower scores on grade 3-8 math and English tests
Wells school officials are preparing for what they expect will be lower scores on the Grade 3-8 math and English exams when the results are released on Wednesday, July 28. The results will reflect newly adopted procedures from the New York State Education Department (SED) that raise the scores students must earn in order to be considered “proficient” in a subject.
“Like most districts across the state, Wells may see a dip in its test scores due to a change in the ‘cut scores’ that SED uses to determine whether students are achieving at high enough levels,” explained Interim Superintendent Dr. Jack Zeis. “It doesn't mean that our students didn't perform as well on the tests. The difference is the state has raised the passing grade. Putting it simply, if the passing grade was 75, it is now going to be 85.”
The new grading standards are designed to better measure how well students have mastered important skills—skills they need to be successful in high school and later in college and the workplace.

Wells and Lake Pleasant Boards of Education explore merger option
A special meeting on Monday, July 19, between Board of Education members from Wells, Lake Pleasant and Piseco resulted in unanimous support by Wells and Lake Pleasant Boards of Education for a feasibility study of a possible merger of Wells and Lake Pleasant.
Citing the hope of providing the best possible education for students in today’s harsh economic climate, Wells Board of Education President Cathie Rust enumerated several reasons why a merger between Wells and Lake Pleasant could be the best solution.
State mandates and regulations are a challenge to maintaining a successful program in a small high school, Mrs. Rust explained. Equally challenging is attracting an administrator to serve as both superintendent and high school principal. In unsettled financial times, it is difficult to justify additional administrative positions, or to construct a budget that maintains strong academic programming while being sensitive to the needs of area taxpayers.

Three positions restored to provide essential courses
Wells Board of Education created part-time positions in Art, Health and Business Education for the 2010-11 school year when it was concluded that the cuts that eliminated those positions exceeded limitations imposed by state regulations and the Wells Teachers Association contract.
