Scholarama awards outstanding efforts
Wells students earn jackets and pins for well-rounded achievement
Some students excel at academics. Some give their all in sports, art or music. Others exhibit leadership skills in student council or an after-school club, while some seem to have their hands in everything. For the past 11 years, Wells Central School teachers have recognized students who participate and excel in diverse areas of student life in an annual ceremony called Scholarama, held during a school assembly on May 28.
High school students at Wells earn recognition in the form of a specially-designed pin for efforts above and beyond the ordinary in course work and after-school activities. Each teacher sets the criteria in their specific subject area, but generally it is the student who stands out for extraordinary achievement, extraordinary effort, or extraordinary enthusiasm.
Pins are awarded for highest average, perfect attendance and most improved student. But pins also honor leadership displayed in student council and other extracurricular clubs, diligence and dedication in a particular subject, mentoring of fellow students and sometimes just a good attitude.
Mock crash demonstrates the price of drinking and driving
A cold, spring shower spattered drops across the already rain-slick road. Two cars along the shoulder were a tangled wreck on the grass, right in front of Wells Central School. Beer cans and an empty bottle lay strewn across the ground, along with three bodies. Two teenagers moaned and moved occasionally. The third lay still.
Seeing the crash site in the dreary rain was chilling. And that was the intent. The damaged cars and bodies were the set pieces for a mock accident staged by the Wells’ chapter of Students Again Destructive Decisions (SADD) on Wednesday, May 28, a lesson timed to precede the junior prom on Saturday night.
